New vacuum cleaner ecodesign standards in the bag

Vacuum cleaner technology continues to develop, demonstrating high performance whilst using less power and with lower noise.

New ecodesign regulations for vacuums have come in from 1st September 2017. This is the second tier introduced - the first tier which came in from September 2014 set an initial wattage cap of 1600 W - since then manufacturers have demonstrated great innovation in product and motor design, refreshing the vacuum market with greener products, alongside an energy label providing performance ratings for dust pick-up and dust re-emission.

For new vacuum cleaners entering the market, the following limits now apply:

  • A cap on power consumption at 900 W
  • Annual power consumption below 43 kWh/year (equivalent to the middle of the D band)
  • Minimum carpet dust pick-up class of E
  • Minimum hard-floor dust pick up class of F
  • Minimum dust re-emission class of F
  • Cap on noise of 80 dB

And for the first time, durability requirements will apply:

  • Motors must demonstrate that they can last for 500 hours operational time
  • Vacuum hoses must last for at least 40,000 oscillations.

Across Europe, improving vacuum cleaner energy use can save as much as 19 TWh annually - this is around the annual residential electricity consumption of Belgium. Topten has new listings of vacuum cleaners in our floorcare section - if it's time for an upgrade, there are a range of models that can easily do the job using less energy.
